This is what I found Boaz (14) doing at lunch yesterday, and it makes me immensely happy. He was so wrapped up in the book he was reading, he brought it to the table while he ate.
Normally I don't allow the children to read a the table. I do try to teach them decent manners. But I'm such an avid reader myself, we normally break this rule a couple of times a week. We were pressed for time yesterday since we had Cub Scout den day (hence the school supplies still covering the table).
Another thing about this photo that makes me so happy is Boaz's choice of books. We just finished this as a read aloud Monday night. He immediately picked it up and decided to read this on his own. English is a second language for Boaz and my Liberian children still miss a lot when I read aloud. To me, there is no better way for him to improve his English and reading skills than to read a book he's already heard.
And, he is reading a chapter book. Something he couldn't do a year ago.
Yes, these photos made my day yesterday. Tangible proof that we are making progress.
