Why, set them up with an embroidery project, of course. Just look at Tucker's little three-year-old hands! It makes me fall in love again just seeing them work so carefully.
I'm just dying to know what God has in store for this little guy, who colors so carefully and has the patience to work on a project like this.
Yesterday afternoon while some of my older children were busy sewing (dolls and doll clothes) Mordecai (6) asked if he could sew. I suddenly thought of these embroidery supplies I had recently purchased, and set him up.
Of course, then Hezekiah (4) and Tucker (3) wanted to "sew".
I got all three boys set up with hoop, canvas, needles and floss. I showed them how to go in and out of the little squares. They just loved it. When they would finish with one color (making stitches of all sizes) I would set them up with another color.
When Avi climbed on the couch to watch Tucker I thought, Oh no, now she's going to want to "sew", but amazingly enough, she didn't ask, she just sat and watched Tucker until she lost interest.
Now admittedly, this project is probably not going to buy you a lot of free time, since you will be replacing floss and undoing knots every 2.3 minutes, but it will give your boys a sense of accomplishment. They will learn patience and diligence. They will exercise their fine motor skills. And probably have a whole lot of fun along the way.
