Saturday we attended a Historical Harvest Party hosted by friends. Each child researched someone from history and presented what they learned. Our family's character's spanned the 1500's to the 1940's, which made a lot of work for this Mama.
Tilly chose Mary Jemison, a girl who was kidnapped by Indians and her entire family massacred. Mary Jemison eventually chose to spend her life with the Indians rather than return to the white people. It's quite a story, one that I guarantee you will find fascinating.
Hezekiah was of course, Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon. I'm not quite sure what Hezekiah's fascination with Buzz it, but it's always Buzz he pretends to be. Hezekiah insisted on making his poster himself, which included lush illustrations, complete with aliens on the moon saying "Thank You". He even got up in front of everyone and shared his poster!
Kalina was Eleanor Roosevelt.
Mordecai was Sitting Bull. It wasn't until after I had given him the mohawk that it suddenly occurred to me that some parents might pause and consider before shaving off three fourths of their son's hair. Mordecai said he wanted to be an Indian and have a mohawk, so off went his hair. I think it suits him.
Judah chose Ulysses S. Grant. He would have loved to dress up, but we just couldn't pull together a Civil War costume. Judah had a great attitude though, and approached his research with gusto.
Enoch was William the Silent, also known as William of Orange.
Jubilee was Queen Elizabeth I. Jubilee wrote her paper all by herself (I typed it up for her). Her favorite fact was: Elizabeth ate so many sweets that her teeth were rotten. We must have heard that statement a hundred times last week.
Avi (as an Indian) with her two best friends, Sacagewea and Annie Oakley. Avi is very into being Indian lately, and says every day "I'm half Indian". Well, she's not quite half, but she is part Choctaw.
I was so proud of all the children who stood up in front of everyone and presented what they had learned. They did a wonderful job, and obviously took pride in their work. For more photo's check out Small Wonders and Syndiluhu.
